Common complaints of patients who deal with neck pain include decreased range of motion in the neck, pain/numbness or tingling/weakness in the shoulder or arm, and headaches. There are many different causes of neck pain and associated symptoms. Common causes of neck pain include muscle strains, trauma or injury (damaging muscles, tendons, or ligaments), and herniated cervical disc. Often there are multiple causes of your neck pain that will need to be addressed. Our doctors will take your history, physical examination, and related x-rays/lab work and carefully diagnose the source or sources of your neck pain.
Management of neck pain depends on the etiology of the pain. Our doctors will work with you to first diagnose the source of the pain and then form a comprehensive treatment plan addressing all aspects of your neck pain. In addition to medication management (including many non narcotic options), the physicians may recommend minimally invasive procedures to help control your pain. Emotional stressors such as depression, anxiety, and stress can exacerbate neck pain and should be addressed. Physical therapy is useful to help improve range of motion and muscular strength. We also encourage alternative therapies such as chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Exercise improves neck pain by increasing range of motion and flexibility. During exercise, your body releases natural pain relieving hormones called endorphins. Proper nutrition is valuable to maintain or lose weight and ensure you have no nutritional deficiencies that can contribute to your pain. We take great care to individualize your treatment so that you are given the tools necessary to get the relief you are looking for.
