Whiplash Injury

Whiplash syndrome refers to neck pain that is generated from injury to the neck after a rapid backward and subsequent forward motion to the neck from an external source. This mechanism of injury can cause damage to the muscles, ligaments and potentially facet joints within the neck (cervical spine). Typically these symptoms occur after a car accident where an individual is rear-ended but can also occur after other physical trauma or contact sports.

Management of whiplash injury depends on the etiology and severity of the pain. Mild whiplash injury will often resolve with no medical treatment over time. Our doctors will work with you to first diagnose the source of the pain and then form a comprehensive treatment plan addressing all aspects of your whiplash injury. Possible treatments range from non-invasive therapy such as physical therapy and medication to minimally invasive options such as cervical facet injections or medial branch blocks. These injections help localize and confirm the source of the pain, providing diagnostic information and allowing the creation of a more well-defined and accurate long-term plan of treatment. We take great care to individualize your treatment so that you are given the tools necessary to get the relief you are looking for.
